Napiershall Studios Group Show

Summer 2007

Napiershall Street Studios proudly opened its second annual Group Show on June 16th 2007 at the west end’s Napiershall Street Centre.

The exhibition showcased exciting new works by the group’s current members, who are emerging artists working in the disciplines of painting, installation, drawing, multimedia and sculpture.  Members exhibited their work to take advantage of the distinctive architectural setting of the Napiershall Street Centre.  The show wass entirely funded by generous donations from the local community, which allowed the artists an exciting opportunity to make innovative works without the pressures from gallery sales.

Exhibiting members included recent graduates from Glasgow School of Art, Grays School of Art in Aberdeen, Lancaster Institute of Contemporary Art, and University of Washington School of Art in the USA.  They are represented by various galleries locally and internationally.

Sandy Moffat gave another great speech and there was live music throughout the exhibition.

Napiershall Street Centre is located at 39 Napiershall Street, Glasgow.

Participating Artists: Napiershall Street Studios Group Show 2007

Janie Nicoll-  Janie’s current works explore the notion of the social pariah, the vilification of youth, and the fabrication of masculine stereotypes.  Her work has developed through photographic techniques, such as screen-printing and digital photography and in recent years she has generally worked with site-specific installation, often creating text based works, made from multiple digital images. Teresa Brown- Teresa is a practicing artist and a psychodrama psychotherapist; she sees the processes of both as being integral to her artwork.  What lies central to the making of the work is her fascination with the power of the unconscious and how it affects us and our relationships with others.  This is connected to her passion for exploring what happens in ‘the space between’ the viewer and the painting, the artist and the painting, and the relationships created within these dynamics.  www.Teresambrown.com

Emma Semple- Emma is interested in documenting personal experiences through painting and drawing. Her work is influenced by both the familiar and the exotic- by both travels abroad and in Scotland. She is interested in capturing energy, a fleeting moment in time, and creating compelling tensions within the picture frame. She strives to push the boundaries between abstract and representational qualities, whilst exploring the medium and 3-D possibilities of oil paint.

Masako Suzuki- Masako is a Japanese artist graduated from Glasgow School of Art. She, with strong concern in activity of painting itself, explores space, light, and shadow that bring the viewers to certain consciousness taking various forms of drawing, painting and installation.

Catherine Lyne- Catherine’s work deals with choreographing the mood of the image.  Rather than choreographing the subject matter, she creates vivid vignettes from more static still lives.

Molly Mac- Molly’s highly textured works challenge the definitions of the playful and the explicit.  Painting and sculpting with encaustic wax on various media, Molly attempts to establish a conversation between the fleshy romance of the human form and the empirical matrix of sociological doctrine.

Emma Waine- For Emma, painting is a journey. Every time she goes to a new urban environment she tries to capture the vibrancy and excitement of the place while also recording specific forms and patterns. In her paintings she constructs an amalgamation of the above and in doing so hopes to take the viewer on this same journey.

Matt Reid - Matt enjoys painting heavily textured abstracts, employing
the natural ingredients of wax and bark into his work.  Lately he has
started a new series of landscapes, influenced from his writing during
periods of automatism.

Tom Brown - Tom paints figuratively, drawing inspiration from the emotional
aspect of the Glasgow life he lives and observes.  Many of his paintings
have been based on love, hate and despair.

Jane Lee - J D Lee happily gave up an unpromising career in IT to spend more
time painting.  Through her work she expresses her unease at the current
unhealthy political situation.

Jim Hamilton - Jim paints from his extensive collection of life
drawings.  His work is very figurative and he is currently working on a
series exploring the movement and perspective of jazz.
